Today marks the beginning 30th Summer Olympic Games. This year they will be London, England and the whole world can’t wait for the exciting games to start! Here are some fun facts to share with fellow Olympic fans.

204 different countries are participating in this years Olympics for a total of over 10,000 athletes.

London has focused on making sure construction of buildings for the Olympics are sustainable and eco-friendly. Many of the buildings will feature new, exciting innovations. Some buildings will use solar energy and obtain energy from waste.

Food packaging at the games will be made from compostable materials if they can’t be recycled. So all fast food wrappers and drink cartons will contribute to renewable energy.

This years mascots are Wenlock and Mandeville, their story tells of them forming from the steel of the Olympic Stadium.

There will be 26 sports featured at these games. Women’s boxing will make its debut in the Olympics for the first time.

The U.S.A. has won more medals at the Summer Olympics than any other country; let’s see if we can keep that going this year!
