August 3rd is National Watermelon Day. Yes, this summer staple gets its own holiday and for good reasons too! The first watermelon harvest occurred 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Today it’s a fruit synonymous with summer. To get you started with your watermelon festivities here’s some interesting info.

While watermelon probably originated in Africa it certainly has traveled far. Watermelons crossed the Mediterranean Sea thanks to merchant ships and ended up in China. In the 13th century watermelon had made its way to Europe. Today China is the number one producer of watermelon. America is 4th.

When tying to choose the perfect watermelon follow three simple steps. Look the watermelon over to make sure it bruise and dent free. Lift the watermelon up; it should be heavy for its size. Did you know watermelons are 92% water? They really are water-melons! Finally turn the watermelon over, the bottom should have a yellow spot from where the fruit sat on the ground and ripened. Follow these easy steps and you’ll be able to choose the best watermelon around.

Surprisingly watermelons are cousins to pumpkins and squash they all grow on vines. And did you know you should always wash your watermelon before eating it? Bill Carson probably had a hard time washing his watermelon; it weighed 262 pounds, making it a world record holder!

To celebrate Watermelon Day make some watermelon popsicles. Simply puree watermelon and pour it into popsicle molds, add some fresh fruit for a popsicle fruit salad! Do your kids want to celebrate Halloween in August? Scoop out the watermelon from the top of the fruit and then carve a fun face on the front.  You can also carve out a watermelon and use it as a basket to hold other fruit to make a fun party feature! Watermelon really is a terrific fruit so why not celebrate it today!
